When Should Fertility Acupuncture Begin?

Welcome to my blog about when acupuncture for fertility should begin. If you’re researching acupuncture for fertility support in the Telford area, please read on for information and advice.

People come to acupuncture for fertility support at all stages of their fertility journey.

Whether you are TTC naturally or planning IVF, a 3-month preparation stage should be considered. This may seem like a lot, but here’s why:

It takes approximately 3 months for both egg and sperm to mature (naturally, not within IVF), so any changes or support actions you choose may not impact the already-matured cells, but can have a greater effect on those that are developing.

For the mums-to-be, if you are experiencing menstrual irregularities for example, it may take 3 months to encourage greater regularity – we are aiming to make changes that your body can sustain independently. We will be working towards optimising your menstrual cycle as necessary, and increasing the flow of Blood and Qi to the uterus to support healthy conception. If you are going down the route of IVF, any prep you do will be beneficial to your body.

For the dads-to-be, 3 months can make a difference to sperm quality, with research indicating DNA fragmentation levels can drop when nutrition, hydration and stress management are improved. There has been much less research done into the effects of acupuncture and male fertility than there has been female (which reflects the conventional medical approach to fertility), but Chinese Medicine takes a holistic view to supporting many different body systems, which can all contribute to improving sperm quality and fertility outcomes.

3 months is also good amount of time for both partners to take an honest look at lifestyle and make changes as necessary; think about stress levels, sleep, nutrition, hydration, nicotine, alcohol consumption, and weight (including if you are someone who is very lean).

If you can give yourself 3-6 months for both partners to work on healthy habits, pregnancy may happen naturally, or, you will be in a stronger position to start assisted reproduction.

A little aside note: if you are about to start an IVF cycle and have only just decided you’d like to use acupuncture alongside it, and have only just found this blog post, don’t be disheartened, I will still be able to support you. Just get in touch ASAP as the sooner we can get started, the better.

I hope this has been helpful and informative to your research about acupuncture for fertility support.
