Fertility is really close to my heart and is a part of my job I really enjoy. I understand how incredibly personal and heart-wrenching it is to go through a fertility journey and feel privileged to support my patients along the way. I have a range of experience supporting patients through a natural TTC journey, IVF prep, those actively undergoing IVF treatment, as well as pregnancy care.

It’s important to note that I am not a fertility expert, whatever that really means. I enjoy the general practice aspect of the acupuncture that I do, and do not ‘specialise’ in any one area, however, a large part of my caseload at any given time is fertility work. When you are looking for an acupuncturist to help you, I would advise you to check their qualifications carefully; acupuncture is an unregulated industry in the UK so the levels of training can vary widely. The British Acupuncture Council is the only acupuncture regulatory body that is part of the Professional Standards Agency, which is a government-backed agency regulating quality health care provision. I would always recommend using a British Acupuncture Council member, as to gain membership, the acupuncturist must have completed rigorous and high-level training equivalent to a degree, over 3 years, rather than a few weekend classes.  If you find someone who is a fertility ‘specialist’ please do still check their overall levels of training, beyond any claims of expertise.

Fertility acupuncture often takes place over a prolonged period, so it’s really important to choose the practitioner that is right for you; all acupuncturists work in slightly different ways regardless of their training. You need to find someone you feel comfortable talking in depth to about some - usually - quite personal issues, and someone you feel you can ask questions to at any time. Your acupuncturist should be willing and able to explain the rationale for your acupuncture treatment (should you be interested) as well as have good knowledge of the conventional medical side of your journey.

If you are an IVF patient, you might also want to check if your acupuncturist offers appointments out of normal hours should it be necessary; for example, acupuncture is often advised pre and post embryo transfer, and if this falls on a weekend, would your acupuncturist be able to see you? (my answer to that is I generally have the flexibility to see my IVF patients outside normal hours if necessary).
