Five Element Acupuncture in Telford

Welcome, and thank you for visiting. My name is Sarah and I provide Five Element Acupuncture in Telford. I welcome clients from all over Telford and beyond, including Bridgnorth, Shifnal, Much Wenlock, Broseley and the wider Shropshire area.

About Me

I spent 3 years studying for the Licentiate in Acupuncture, a 3-year degree-level course fully accredited by the British Acupuncture Accreditation Board, and qualified with distinction. I am a proud member of the British Acupuncture Council, the UK's largest regulatory body for practitioners of traditional acupuncture, guaranteeing high standards of training, safe practice and professional conduct. British Acupuncture Council members are also registered with the Professional Standards Authority, a government body that regulates health and social care providers. My own acupuncture journey began during the five years I spent living in China, and seeing Chinese Medicine including acupuncture in every day life. It is my privilege to be able to share that with you now. I welcome all patient cases and have a particular interest in mental health, women's health and supporting the wellbeing of teenagers and young people.

About Acupuncture

The Chinese Medicine system dates back over 2000 years and is widely used around the world today. It is based around the concept of Qi, and how this energy flows through our bodies. Chinese Medicine makes no distinction between body and mind, so is truly holistic and can impact many aspects of wellbeing. As a Five Element acupuncturist, I use the relationships between the Five Elements to look for patterns of disharmony and aim to treat the root cause of any ailments. Very fine needles are inserted at acupuncture points on the body to stimulate the body's own healing response and help re-establish optimum flow of Qi. With your consent I will sometimes use additional techniques such as cupping and gua sha, as well as auricular (ear) acupuncture points. Many patients find acupuncture deeply relaxing, no matter the reason for treatment, and report a wide range of positive effects.

Benefits of acupuncture

Gentle

People from all walks of life can benefit from acupuncture, including the very young and the very old, pregnant women, elite athletes, and those undergoing palliative care. It can be used effectively alongside other care and medical approaches or on it's own. Regardless of the reason people choose acupuncture, relaxation is usually a welcome benefit.

Acupuncture with a highly-trained therapist is a safe and medication-free form of healthcare.

Effective

A growing body of evidence-based clinical research is discovering how the body responds to acupuncture and its benefits for a wide range of common health conditions. Acupuncture is included in the NICE guidelines for management of headache and primary chronic pain, and the evidence for the effectiveness of acupuncture is expanding all the time. Treatment is tailored to the person, not just the condition, so you can benefit from truly individualised support.

Support

Acupuncture stimulates your own healing response, and has wide-reaching effects on the whole body and mind, helping you to navigate the ups and downs of life. Many acupuncture patients report an improved feeling of being able to cope.

The return to a more balanced state leads to a happier, healthier you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it feel like?

Many people expect acupuncture to be painful, but please be reassured the needles are extremely fine – about the thickness of two human hairs – and when inserted by a highly-trained acupuncturist, you may be surprised by how little you feel. Sensations can include a dull ache, mild tingling, or even a feeling of energy shooting along your body. Depending on the treatment, needles may be inserted and removed immediately, or left in for up to 20 minutes while you rest. Your comfort is my priority, so you should always let me know how you feel during treatment.

What happens at the first appointment?

During the first appointment I will take a full medical history from you, covering all aspects of your health and lifestyle. I will send you a health questionnaire to complete in advance but may still need to gather extra information. I will use gentle diagnostic techniques including pulse taking, tongue observation and checking the temperature distribution in your body. I will also check your blood pressure. I will be able to do your first treatment following this and answer any questions you may have.

How will I feel after acupuncture?

How soon you feel the benefit of acupuncture varies person to person; it can be instantaneous, but sometimes the effect can be more gradual. It is normal to feel relaxed after an acupuncture treatment, and even tired; try to allow your body the time to rest if you feel you need it. Some people may notice a brief flare-up of symptoms, but this should not last long and you can always contact me between appointments for advice.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions needed will vary person by person, but after 4-5 treatments you will know how acupuncture is working for you. Ideally you will have the first few treatments on a weekly basis, which will then spread out based on your progress. Some people find acupuncture so beneficial they return for regular ‘top-up’ treatments. We will always discuss what is right for you.

Do you treat children and teenagers?

I will gladly treat older children and teenagers, from age 12 upwards. As a former secondary school teacher and mum, I know that young people sometimes need a helping hand to support their health and wellbeing, and I am committed to offering a gentle, medication-free option for young people. I do not treat children under the age of 12 due to having not completed specialist pediatric training, as strongly recommended by The British Acupuncture council. All under 16s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
